Almanacs

Almanacs give basic information on popular topics. This is a good place to look for statistics or lists of information.
  • Fact Monster – Searches can be performed using keywords or categories. There is a link to the adult version of this site if more information is needed. This site is hosted by the Information Please company. Beware of advertising!

  • Farmer's Almanac – According to their web site this is "U.S. and Canada's favorite almanac since 1818."

  • CIA World Fact Book – This government source is great for basic information about foreign countries and maps. Miscellaneous


Biography

These resources will help you find information on famous people.
  • Biographical Dictionary – Search for over 20,000 interesting and important people. This is the online version of the Cambridge Biographical Encyclopedia. It is hosted by A&E Television.

  • Commonly Misspelled Words – List of 90 frequently misspelled words

  • The American Presidency – This web version of a section of the Grolier's Encyclopedia profiles each president and some first ladies.


Dictionaries/Quotations

These sources give information about words and word relationships. Bartlett's Familiar Quotations is also on this list.

Directories

Directories help you find things such as a bike shop nearby or answer a specific fact. They are usually organized by category.

Encyclopedias

Encyclopedias are great places to begin a report or project. They give basic facts on a wide variety of subjects.

Geography

Find information about the world around you using these resources.
  • Flags of the World – View over 5,000 images of flags and find out other useful information at this site.

  • Great Globe Gallery – View dozens of pictures of the earth from a variety of sites listed here such as the NASA archives.

  • U.S. Gazetteer – Search for a map of any city in the United States. This site is sponsored by the U.S. Census Bureau.

  • Yahoo's Countries Page – This page hosted by Yahoo has links to countries from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe.

  • Yahoo Maps – Type in a street address and get a map! It's that easy!


Government

Use these resources to find information about state and local government, also history.

Libraries

These sites organize resources on the Web for students to use. There are also library catalogs on this list.
  • ALA KidsConnect! – Ask a volunteer school librarian a homework question at this site hosted by the American Library Association.

  • Internet Public Library Youth Division – This is a comprehensive site for information via the Internet hosted by the University of Michigan.

  • Library of Congress – An important source of information hosted by one of the finest libraries in the world. Check out the American Memory Project.

  • Palo Alto Public Library – This is the youth home page of the public library system in Palo Alto. Explore the links listed here or browse the online catalog.

  • Silicon Valley Web Catalog – This is an experimental online catalog of all the public libraries in Santa Clara County. Consult the Catalog's Tips Page for best results.

  • Smithsonian – This is the web site for the famous museum in Washington D.C.


Measurement

This list contains calendar and measurement information.
  • Calendar – Type in a month and a year and view a calendar page for that time period. This site is hosted by a computer programmer.

  • Multicultural Calendar – Search this site managed by educators from all over the world for information on international holidays.

  • Science Made Simple Conversion Chart – Hosted by a publisher of science books for children, this site permits users to convert measurements between the Metric and English systems.

  • State and Local Governments – A Library of Congress Internet Resource Page lists links to state related web sites as well as links to every official state site.

  • U.S. Capitol Virtual Tour – Tour the U.S. Capitol on this site hosted by the United States Senate.

  • Welcome to the White House – Click on the White House for Kids link for information about keeping informed about what is going on in government.


Review Sources for Internet Sites

Go to these sites to find more useful Web resources and to read reviews of web sites.
  • American Library Association 50 Sites – This list is part of a very handy guide called The Librarians Guide to Cyberspace for Parents & Kids.

  • Internet Scout Report – This is a weekly publication designed for researchers and educators. They have a searchable archive of past editions. As this web site states, this is a great place to find "new and newly discovered resources."

  • Kathy Schrock's Guide to Educators – Schrock's guide has been a popular review source with teachers for years. It is now sponsored by the Discovery Channel.
