DEFINITION
Under limited supervision, to perform skilled maintenance, construction, and repair work of District building appurtenances, and equipment; and to do related work as required consistent with the job description.
TYPICAL TASKS
The incumbents in this class perform a variety of skilled trade duties in two or more of the building or mechanical trades as a major assignment.
Examples of duties: (NOTE: These examples are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed in positions allocated to this class.)
- may install, maintain and make repairs to electrical circuits and equipment;
- may maintain and make repairs to gas and water lines, sprinklers and fixtures;
- may inspect, maintain and repair heater and boiler systems;
- may repair and adjust locks;
- may repair and reset clocks and bell systems;
- may build forms and mix and pour concrete;
- may weld;
- may repair furniture, and similar equipment and fixtures;
- may prepare for and paint a wide variety of surfaces;
- may perform tasks related to the glazier trade.
LICENSE: Possession and maintenance of a valid California Driver's License.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
The ability to carry out oral and written directions, read, write and speak at a level sufficient to fulfill the duties to be performed for the position described. Approved courses or equivalent background in three or more of the construction or mechanical trades is desirable. Two years experience as a Maintenance Tradesperson I or demonstrable equivalency. Subject to lifting, standing, working around hazardous materials and equipment; may be required to work on scaffolding.
Essential skills include the ability to:
- perform skilled level work in one or more of the building or mechanical trades;
- use required tools and equipment skillfully and safely;
- read and work from sketches and blueprints; keep accurate work records;
- follow and give oral and written directions;
- perform heavy manual labor;
- maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
This position requires thorough knowledge of:
- standard methods, materials, equipment and terms used in one or more of the building or mechanical trades;
- fundamentals of carpentry, painting, electrical and plumbing work, and shop practices;
- trade codes in one or more of the building mechanical trades;
- safety practices and procedures.
