QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree desired in educational administration, public information, communication, marketing, or related field.

Experience:

Five years of increasingly responsible public information, journalism, public school administration, or related experience desired.

Definition:

To coordinate distribution of accurate information about the school district to both internal and external publics; promote a better understanding of the school district’s objectives, programs, and achievements; promote a community climate of support for the district; and provide communication services to schools and departments.

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Implement district-wide strategy to effectively communicate with staff and constituents.

Assist district office and school site administrators in the development of effective communications mechanisms.

Coordinate requests for information from the Board of Education, staff, and community and expedite appropriate follow-through.

Advise district staff and Board of Education on matters of public and media information, communications, and business partnership opportunities.

Support district staff in effectively communicating important board policies, administrative regulations and new laws to staff, students, and the community.

Seek out and cultivate news and information resources for developing stories that reflect the district’s constructive and positive efforts for transparency and community outreach.

Assist with recognizing efforts of school system employees and volunteers.

Maintain professional relationships with newspapers and other media representatives.

Gather information and prepare news releases, including appropriate photographs, for mass media as well as special publications, including student and staff recognition.

Recommend improved methods and procedures for quality communication vehicles.

Provide input regarding district website content and social media communications to ensure consistency, clarity, and accuracy of information provided.

Create, review, edit and critique written and published materials about the district and its programs.

Oversee the production of district publications, as appropriate, and assist sites and departments in the development of informational material, brochures, letters, speeches and related items.

Manage all Public Records Act Requests.

Attend Board of Education and community/staff advisory committee meetings as required.

Evaluate performance of assigned staff.

Perform other duties as assigned.

 

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of public information and communications principles and practices.

Knowledge of school district laws, policies, and procedures.

Ability to exhibit discretion and tact with information and communication received and given.

Ability to oversee the development and implementation of communications and public information strategies, goals, objectives, programs, projects, services, and activities.

Ability to prepare and present written and oral reports to diverse audiences that effectively represent the school district to the community.

Ability to work under time sensitive deadlines, pressure, and with frequent interruptions.

Knowledge with computer software, hardware, and other technology pertinent to areas of specialization.
