On August 26, 2008, the Board of Education appointed the seven members of the initial Citizens' Oversight Committee. This committee has met quarterly for the last two years, reviewing the progress of the program, reviewing the results of performance and financial audits, and has issued the first annual report.
Members of the Palo Alto Unified School District Citizens' Oversight Committee
Mr. Walt Hays is chair of the PAUSD Sustainable Schools Committee and also chair of the City of Palo Alto Community Environmental Action Partnership. He has received the Chamber of Commerce Tall Trees Award and also the Avenidas Lifetimes of Achievement Award. He is Past President of the Palo Alto Rotary Club and former President of Acterra. Walt and his wife Kay have three adult children who attended PAUSD schools.
Mr. Todd Collins is a managing director of a Palo Alto based investment company and is a parent of current District students. His experience includes oversight of capital investment and financing projects. He has served as a PTA officer and in youth sports activities. He is a member of a taxpayer organization, the Silicon Valley Taxpayers' Association.
Mr. James Cowie is Senior Vice President and General Counsel of Cadence Design Systems. His experirence includes 19 years as transactional attorney, including real estate development and construction. He is a past Treasurer of the El Carmelo PTA and coaches National Junior Basketball. He has three children who attend PAUSD schools, one at El Carmelo Elementary Shool, one at JLS Middle School , and one at Palo Alto High School.
Ms. Catherine Garber is a practicing architect in Palo Alto and has two children who graduated from the District. Her architectural firm, Fergus Garber Group, is a member of the Palo Alto Chamber of Commerce. With over 25 years of experience as an architect, she is familiar with the design and review process for construction projects. She is the business organization representative.
Mr. Bruce Whitson is a Palo Alto realtor and owner of Whitson Properties. Bruce has two daughters. Allison is a Paly graduate and attends UC Davis. Kimberly is a senior at Paly and was a member of last year’s state volleyball championship team. He is a founding member of the Palo Alto Elite Volleyball Club and a member of the Silicon Valley Association of Realtors. He has been treasurer for three different PTAs over the years.
Ms. Arianne Teherani is a Palo Alto resident and has two children who attend Escondido School and a third child not yet school age. She is an associate professor of Medicine and Education at University of California, San Francisco. She has been actively involved as a volunteer with PAUSD. She has also volunteered and organized efforts for community organizations community service in education of the underserved.
Mr. Daniel Sin-Yew Teo is a graduate of Cambridge University and also holds a Master's degree from Stanford Graduate School of Business. He has been a CFO of both private and publically listed companies. He has worked for companies with experience in building water treatment plants and also with building renewable energy projects and is very familiar with construction.
